May You Have Enough

Posted on 01 January 2010

Wow, it’s been a while.  How are you?

I have been up to everything and nothing.  I decided lately that I miss this blogging thing.  I haven’t hung out in the Interweb in about a year and a half – I have a backup of my old content but I haven’t figure out a way with Wordpress to resurrect it yet.  I will, someday, because that was some fun stuff.

I heard a LOT of folks saying that 2009 generally sucked for them.  I can’t say it was a banner year for me, but I won’t say that it was bad.  Here are some things that I am thankful for:

  • The husband and I kept our jobs and our home and that means a lot considering many around us have been affected by the economy.  I have friends that are actually moving to other states to find work and it is heartbreaking for them and for us.
  • After two years of being back in the States, we are finally feeling ’settled’ – We briefly flirted with the idea of moving to Los Angeles, but nixed that.  And I can’t tell you how happy I am that we did.  On so many different levels.
  • We did a little bit of traveling, to Omaha and Chicago – Omaha because it was close and cheap and we needed to get out of Dodge.  I did like the Old Town Market area, but in March, there just wasn’t a lot to see or do.  Not sure we will go back, but now we can say we’ve been there.  Chicago, we totally fell in love with, and if the winters there were bearable, and we could find jobs, we would probably move there in a flash.  But the economy being what it is, fuhgeddaboudit!
  • I planted my first garden – two 4×4 containers!  I researched square foot gardening and gave it a good shot.  I had two massive obstacles – First, the garden was decimated by bunnies.  I have never hated the friggin vermin so much in my entire life!  Second, we had so much moisture that the beds molded – The umpteen varieties of tomato plants sort of made it, but we didn’t get much.  But what we got was SO flavorful that I am already planning for this next year and have the seeds and the materials for two more boxes ready to go.  My goal is to start a farmer’s market in my backyard.  And I am thinking about selling rabbit meat.
  • I have seriously improved my cooking skills and have added some nice editions to my cookbook collection.  My ass-spread is evidence of this.
  • We had lots of friends visit from out of town last year and already have plans for them to visit again in February, April and June.  The guestroom is getting use!
  • We adopted a new kitten that we named Coco initially, until we found out that she was actually a boy.  He was renamed Ridley after the Husband’s favorite director.  Ridley was to fill a void that was created when our other cat died suddenly of FIV.  That was a horrible experience, but Ridley has injected some fun and lots of affection and purring to our days.  Even if he does practice his Zorro skills in the middle of the night.  We have stocked up on Neosporin.
  • I spent a bit of time on photography and started painting again, which has been fun.  I feel lucky enough to hang around my family and get to document some of our celebrations and I studied with a local artist to pick up some new techniques.  I feel settled enough to devote some serious time to these two things, which I love, in the coming year.  I hope that eventually I can use these things to stop sweating for the Man.  From my fingers to God’s ears.

So while we haven’t exactly set the world on fire, we were able to enjoy life a bit, make our home even more of our own and cultivate some peace in our lives.  After the previous several years, it is exactly what we needed, along with a lot of sleep.  We just needed ‘enough’.

A great Aunt of mine came to Australia to see us get married and that was her wish for us.  Enough.  I wasn’t sure what she meant at the time but I completely understand the sentiment now.  We had a home, our jobs, time off to enjoy, full tummies, fun and lots of love in our lives.  It was enough and it was wonderful.

So that’s about all I will share for now.  I am feeling drawn to the champagne from last night and a big warm bed is calling my name.

Cheers to you and may you you have enough in 2010.
